For Spanish people Christmas Eve, known in Spanish as &#8216;La Nochebuena&#8217; or &#8216;Vispera De Navidad&#8217;, is more of an event than Christmas Day with tradition being for family and friends to come together for a large family feast, generally eaten quite late in the evening. Indeed, some of the more religious families may well eat after midnight mass. The menu can vary with lots of different traditional dishes but you can be sure that Turron, polvorones or mantecados will make an appearance somewhere. The day is a public holiday but restaurants, caf\u00e9s and bars will be open and often with Christmas menus to cater for functions and tourists.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"background: white; color: #26241a;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"background: white; color: #26241a;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">There\u2019s normally lots going on over the Christmas period in Nerja. Take a look at some events which take place every year!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"background: white; color: #26241a;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Typical Christmas Period Events:<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white; color: #26241a; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The municipal band will give its traditional Christmas performance.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"background: white; color: #26241a; text-indent: -18pt;\"><b>23rd December \/ 5pm<\/b> \u2013 Father Christmas parade.&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"ES\" style=\"background: white; color: #26241a; text-indent: -18pt;\">Leaves from the Verano azul park and continues along&nbsp;Calle Ja\u00e9n, Diputaci\u00f3n, Granada, Plaza Ermita, San Miguel, Plaza Catarero, Pintada, Puerta del Mar and finishes on the Balc\u00f3n de Europa.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white; color: #26241a; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Christmas Carol Concert &#8211; An afternoon of Spanish Carols performed on the Balc\u00f3n de Europa.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white; color: #26241a; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The Great Nevada begins in Plaza Cavana &#8211; Those attending are welcome to hot chocolate and King\u2019s cake (Rosc\u00f3n de Reyes).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white; color: #26241a; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><b>31st December<\/b> \/ from 11pm \u2013 New Year on the Balc\u00f3n de Europa &#8211; live music and celebrations.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white; color: #26241a; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Navipark playground &#8211; Plaza de Espa\u00f1a will be transformed for the day into a playpark including ice rink and bouncy castles with fun for the whole family.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: white; color: #26241a; text-indent: -18pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Cartero Real&nbsp;&#8211; The official postmen of the Three Kings arrive in Nerja to accept letters from the local children for Balthasar, Caspar and Melchior. The Balc\u00f3n is the centre of the celebrations in Nerja with a temporary stage erected and live music from 11pm. Its customary in Spain to eat a grape at each strike of the clock at midnight. If you can eat all twelve grapes in time you&#8217;re supposed to have good luck in the new year. There you can watch the firework display which is set off at the very end of the Balc\u00f3n de Europa which looks beautiful with the backdrop of the lights, trees and Andalucian architecture.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Three Kings &#8211; Los Reyes Magos:<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: white; color: #26241a; font-family: inherit; text-align: justify;\">Coinciding with the feast of epiphany when the three wise men arrived in Bethlehem this is the most important event for the children of Nerja as this is the day that they&#8217;ll finally get their presents. In Spain the tradition of Los Reyes Magos is more popular than Santa Claus and is celebrated with a parade through the streets. In Nerja this parade begins each year at the Verano Azul park and finishes on the Balc\u00f3n de Europa. As the floats with the Three Kings pass, sweets are thrown to the kids (and adults) in the crowd with the inevitable competition of who can collect the most!
